Optimizing CNC Machining Design: How to Improve Efficiency and Reduce Costs

April 07, 2025

CNC machining provides high-precision and efficient manufacturing capabilities for industries. However, designing optimized parts for CNC machining is a complex process that involves several constraints and design guidelines. As a leading OEM structural parts manufacturer, we specialize in adapting designs based on CNC machining characteristics to maximize the advantages of the process.

Top 5 Optimization Tips for CNC Machining Design

1.Cavity Depth-to-Width Ratio

In CNC machining, cavity depth should not exceed 3-4 times the width. Deeper cavities face challenges like cutting forces and vibrations, affecting the final precision. Optimizing the cavity design and keeping the depth ratio reasonable is crucial for ensuring machining accuracy.

2.Internal Corner Design

CNC machining cannot achieve sharp internal corners. We recommend setting the internal corner radius to 1/3 of the cavity depth or larger. This not only improves cutting efficiency but also ensures a better surface finish. Increasing the corner radius will allow the tool to cut smoothly, reducing interference during machining.

3.Wall Thickness Design

For metal parts, a wall thickness of at least 0.8mm is recommended; for plastic parts, at least 1.5mm. Thin walls may cause vibrations or deformation during machining, especially in plastics, so material stiffness and temperature changes must be considered.

4.Hole Size and Depth

To reduce machining difficulty, we recommend using standard drill sizes and avoiding excessively deep holes. Standard hole diameters are easier to machine, and the recommended maximum depth should not exceed 4 times the hole diameter, with an absolute limit of 10 times.

5.Thread and Small Feature Design

For threads, we recommend sizes of M6 or larger, and for small features, at least 2.5mm. Small features are prone to vibrations during machining, affecting part accuracy.
